July 30th, 2010 - FRIDAY
Last Friday Concert Series - July
The Bach Quartet Project - In Concert
Transcriptions of J.S. Bach's Organ works by David Cheng for String Quartet.

String quartets by J.S. Bach? Join us Friday evening, July 30th, as we explore the genius of Johann Sebastian Bach as you have never experienced before. We will sample some of Bach’s masterworks originally composed for his favorite instrument, the organ, now cleverly transcribed to take full advantage of a String Quartet.
J.S. was considered the finest and most ingenious organist of his generation, inspiring awe and fear among his contemporaries for his musical prowess. One famous story recounts an upcoming organ competition in Dresden between J.S. Bach and the French musician, Louis Marchand, which drew the attention of thousands. Legend states that, the night before the competition, Marchand heard Bach practicing on the organ, and was so impressed that, by morning, Marchand had suddenly left town!
The program will include a wide variety of works, from the majestic Prelude & Fugue in e minor BWV 533 (Cathedral), to the bold harmonies of the Fantasia & Fugue in G minor BWV 542 (Great). Of course, this program is not complete without the famous Toccata & Fugue in D minor BWV 565.
This concert is sure to win the heart of the most hard core Bach afficionado.
